The Pirates is one of the most popular - some would say the most popular - of the comic operettas of W. S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. And so it proved with the Julian. We had some of the biggest audiences for many years.

The original was written in the late 1880s, of course, but our long-time professional director Fraser Grant wanted, as usual, to give it a new look and feel. So - whilst preserving the words and music of the end of the 19th century - he decided to set our version in 1940 when a boy "young Frederic", an evacuee to the west country from the war, opened a storybook about pirates and the whole thing came to life in front of his eyes..
